GROUNDSPERSON/ GARDENER FOR ALL SAINTS WHITSTABLE

A vacancy has arisen at All Saints Whitstable following the retirement of our groundsperson Phillip Williams after 35 years of service.

We are looking to fill this vacancy as soon as possible with a possible start date of Monday 19th February 2018.

Deadline for Applications is Sunday 4th February 2018. The interviews should take place for those who are succesfully shortlisted the week beginning Monday 5th February 2018.

The work involves keeping the Churchyard and Vicarage garden in good condition. This is mainly through using a sit on lawnmower but some use of push lawnmowers is also necessary. All lawnmowers will be provided.

There is also a lot of work involved in terms of cutting back growth, pruning and general maintenance. Other work is involved, as is made clear in the downloads below.

The Groundsperson should also be available to help locate graves of grieving families and they will be trained to do this. Pastoral sensitivity and a good manner of dealing with the public is important.

The rate of pay is relatively low for gardening work - £9.01 an hour -  but the advantage of this job is it is regular employment of between 16 and 18 hours a week. Paid holidays and sickness payment is included in the employment contract. All expenses for upkeep of equipment and materials is paid for by the All Saints Whitstable District Church Council who will be your employer.

If the successful applicant wishes to do this job on a self-employed basis the paid holidays and sickness payment will not be payable but we will negotiate a better rate of pay per hour with you in lieu of this. Please bear in mind though that because this is a job with large blocks of work, we cannot afford significantly more than £9.01 an hour for self-employed basis. This is because the church is largely dependent on donations from members of the congregation and income from weddings and hall hire to pay its way. We receive no outside funding from government or the local council, other than help maintaining the closed part of the churchyard nearest to the Church which is a relatively small section of the campus.

We do realise that much gardening work is paid nationally at a higher rate than £9.01 an hour but obviously time is spent travelling from one job to another. The advantage of this is that it is regular work in one location that is reliable and dependable. Therefore we think this post would attract someone who wanted regular income working in a friendly and beautiful environment.
